Earthquake in Haiti - January 2010

On 12 January 2010, a powerful 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti-causing massive loss of life, catastrophic building damage, and human suffering. The Government of Haiti estimates 220,000 people lost their lives and over 300,000 people were injured.

LSS/SUMA in Haiti

LSS/SUMA initial actions.

Friday, 15 January 2010. PAHO/WHO has mobilized experts in the LSS/SUMA that have established hubs to manage and account the humanitarian aids arriving to Haiti. Actually they are located in the following sites:

  • Higuero Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Pharmaceutical personnel from PAHO and volunteers from the Dominican Civil Defense are helping in the classification of the medicines in this point.
  • Warehouse Kilometro 12 and 30 of May in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
  • Health Operations Center of the Secretaria de Salud in Jimani, Dominican Republic.

Haiti Rocked by a Powerful Earthquake

Friday, 15 January 2010. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2010, close to the nation's capital of Port-au-Prince, a city of two million people. This was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Haiti along this fault line. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, ranking 154th on the United Nations Human Development Index.

Search and rescue efforts continue at a frantic pace and now, the arrival of an increasing number of specialized search and rescue teams in Port-au-Prince are bolstering efforts. Members of PAHO/WHO's Regional Disaster Response Team arrived in Haiti on Friday and the team will gradually be strengthened over the coming weeks with logisticians, health services specialists, epidemiologists and more.
