The combined effect of Tropical Storm Ida and a low pressure system off the Pacific coast resulted in heavy rains in El Salvador, between 7 and 8 November 2009, causing severe flooding and landslides in seven of the 14 departments. 

On 12 January 2010, a powerful 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti-causing massive loss of life, catastrophic building damage, and human suffering. The Government of Haiti estimates 220,000 people lost their lives and over 300,000 people were injured.

Since the beginning of the emergency PAHO/WHO mobilized experts in the LSS/SUMA system that have collaborate with PROMESS to manage and account the humanitarian aid arrived and distributed in Haiti.
